Join us to hear Dr. Richard Harrison speak on the use of self in therapy and its role in the prevention of vicarious trauma for therapists. This interview & presentation is designed especially for therapists in their first decade of practice who are looking to build a fulfilling career while also protecting against vicarious trauma. Drawing on decades of clinical experience, teaching, and scholarship, Dr. Harrison will explore the therapist’s use of self and the “real” psychotherapy relationship in meaningful therapeutic work. He will explore the therapeutic use of self and how bringing one’s authentic self into the therapeutic relationship can help protect against vicarious trauma and support therapist wellbeing. The presentation will also include a clinical case discussion exploring the therapist’s use of self in practice.
Dr. Richard Harrison, Ph.D., R.Psych
Richard Harrison, is a Registered Psychologist and Certified AEDP Therapist and Supervisor with 25 years experience as a clinician, educator, and group facilitator. He was trained and supervised in AEDP by Diana Fosha and was honored to be invited to teach alongside her at AEDP Immersion Courses in Vancouver and London, England. Richard is also a Certified EFT Therapist and Supervisor. He maintains a full clinical caseload with individuals and couples at the Vancouver Couple & Family Institute and teaches and supervises graduate students in the Counselling Psychology and Psychiatry departments at the University of British Columbia. He enjoys leading workshops on AEDP, EFT, and The Self of the Therapist, and he has authored publications on psychotherapy, therapist self-care, and supervision in professional journals, including “Nurturing Professional Transformance through AEDP Supervision” in the Transformance Journal. As a supervisor and presenter, Richard is valued for his warmth, clarity, and depth of commitment. He genuinely delights in helping people grow and thrive in their personal and professional lives.
